The Joy of Clothing
I’m often asked for outfit inspiration, so I wanted to share a few helpful tips! When planning what to wear, here are some guidelines to keep in mind!
COMPLEMENT & COORDINATE
Choose a palette of 3 or 4 colors you love, and build your outfits around shades that complement each other without feeling too matchy‑matchy. This way, everyone has their own unique look while still blending beautifully in the photo. You might go with soft neutrals and add a few pops of color, or choose a gentle palette with different tones of the same shades for a cohesive, stylish feel.
TIPS ON CHOOSING YOUR CLOTHING
-
I always suggest that mom choose an outfit she feels confident and beautiful in. Then plan the colour palette and everyone else's outfits from there.f you have a fun patterened outfit you would like to use, limit it to one person. That way they will pop and still coordinate with everyone else. Multiple patterns can look busy, and this way they won't be competing with one another.
-
Add dimension and interest by mixing up the texture of the clothing material and accents.
-
Feel free to bring cute little accessories such as scarves, hats, belts and basically anything with a fabulous texture. Accessories can pull together an outfit and make it look complete. Plus by switching up accessories and layers, you can get multiple looks without having to do complete outfit changes.
-
Large logos, large text and neon colours can be very distracting, and are best avoided.
-
Considerations for babies/toddlers:
-
Overalls are absolutely adorable! However, if your baby isn't yet sitting up well, and you're holding them for many of our photos, I notice the top of the bib is often covering their chin and mouth. I'd suggest that overalls work best for littles who are walking.
-
If your daughter is wearing a dress, I'd recommend having her also wear a bloomer/diaper cover/little shorts to cover her diaper under the dress.
-
-
Keep our backdrop in mind when choosing your clothing. If we are on a beach, aim to dress in clothes that are light and flowing. If we are surrounded by fall leaves, layering in great textures is a great option.
-
Most importantly, be sure to wear clothes you feel comfortable in. Your confidence will really shine through in your photos!
And if you feel like you are in need of assistance, I am happy to help you! Arrange your outfits on a large bed or on the floor, and then send me photos of your favourite combinations. We can work together to ensure we find the perfect combination!
LET'S TAKE A LOOK AT GLASSES!
There have been some wonderful innovations in eyewear over the last several years that make wearing glasses day to day so much more comfortable! However, some of these new technologies will impact your portraits.
Does someone in your family wear glasses? Do they have anti-reflective, blue light protection or transition lenses? If so, you'll notice the lenses have a tint or darkness in your photos. You have a few options:
-
Bring an old pair of glasses from home that aren’t transition.
-
Don't wear glasses for our session.
-
Visit a dollar store and pick up a pair of cheap reading glasses to use while taking your photos.
-
For transitions, place your glasses in your pocket for a few minutes to lighten the lenses. Warning, on a sunny day, this will be required frequently!
-
If you're okay with having a blue/purple/green colour tint or dark lenses in your photos, then just wear your glasses as normal for our session!
I hope you have fun and feel inspired as you pick out your
family’s outfits for our session!
